"A Cold North Wind" Jodi Esplin
Jodi, a relatively new customer of Hawk
Mountain Papers, printed this image of “Rufus” a
Maine Coone cat. It was taken on a cold
blustery November day in North Eastern
Nevada. She used Merlin Natural, our 15mil
cotton with no optical brighteners. Jodi won
the Grand Prize of $500 in Hawk Mountain Paper
in our 2007 Print ContestThe judges were
impressed with the detail of the Rufus's
fur. It looks like you reach in and pet
him.
So
I had to ask Jodi what her process was as far as
color and ink saturation adjustment with her Canon
s9000. She "started with the Matte Photo
Paper profile that came with the printer and put
the color adjustment in manual." She then
made a few adjustments to accurately render the
color and contrast. "I am a fan of matte
paper. I really like the texture and color
saturation that the paper offers. It gives a
nice rich look to the images that are printed on
it."
As mentioned, Jodie prints
with a Canon s9000. "My Canon s9000 has
been a great, rock solid printer. I live in
an area with very low humidity, and have never had
any issues with ink drying or clogging in this
printer. This has been the case, even when
there has been a period of time between
prints. However, it uses aging technology,
and is more difficult to get accurate color
representation with the wider gamut color spaces,
such as aRGB and ProPhoto RGB. I would also
like to print panoramic images, and am not able to
with this printer."
Surprisingly enough, Jodi is relatively new
to photography. She got "serious" about two
years ago when she received her first digital SLR
for Christmas. Educated as a chemical
engineer, she left the gold mining industry after
12 years to stay home with her two sons.
This gave her a lot of time to study and practice
photography, (they must be REALLY good
kids). Her family loves the outdoors so with
living in a beautiful mountainous area, she has
two great subjects to constantly practice
with.
"The technical aspects of photography and
imaging really appeal to me. There are so
many ways to manage the light and create the
vision that we see before us. From the
settings in the camera just before the shutter
snap all the way through the type of paper we
choose to place that personal vision on. The
possibilities seem limitless, especially with
technology advancing so quickly."
Jodi has been printing "good quality
images" for about 2 years. She admits it has
been technically challenging with a steep learning
curve. She participates in her local
photography club as a co-president. She also
participates at www.betterphoto.com and www.digitalimagecafe.com, and has found them
both to be great resources for
learning.
Jodi is currently working on a website to
display her work. The launch date will be early in
February. The website will be:
www.jodisperception.com. Her work is
presented locally in Elko, Nevada at:
Picture This! gallery, and the North Eastern
Nevada Museum. |
