Meet our 2005 Grand Prize Print Contest Winner

In anticipation of HMAP releasing the names of our 2006 print  awards, we interviewed our 2005 Grand Prize winner Clayton Jones.  Clayton is an accomplished photographer and has been shooting and printing black and white digital for over five years.  He had his own darkroom at one time but a move

delayed him setting it up again and once he started with digital

 he “never looked back”.

 (Sheila and Julian 2005)

If you peruse his website, www.cjcom.net, you will see not only a portfolio of beautiful images, you will also see that Clayton has freely volunteered some rather valuable information on his workflow that many black and white printers would and probably do pay good money to learn.  He adheres to simpler technique than many of us use to produce his award winning results and advocates avoiding delving into the “expensive world of color management, profiling, RIPs, and curves”.  When Clayton realized he could get excellent results without all that, he wanted to share his knowledge, remembering the “struggle and frustration” in the early days.

Interview Continued:

Amy “What do you like most about what you do?”

Clayton “I especially like the high degree of local control over contrast and density within the image.   I feel more fulfilled artistically, and more energized about the work, than I ever was in the darkroom.   I also love the look of carbon ink prints.   It's a completely new medium and it's gorgeous.”

Amy “What do you like the least?”

Clayton “There is still room for improvement in the printer/ink/software systems in the way color inks are blended to produce black and white tones.”

Amy “What do you like most about Hawk Mountain Papers?”

Clayton “Hawk Mountain” has a unique selection of fine papers, three of which are on my favorites list.   Peregrine Smooth, (Velvet) in particular has some unique qualities which I love and are unlike any other paper I've tested.”

Amy “What do you like the least about Hawk Mountain Papers?”

Clayton “There have on a few occasions been significant differences in papers among different production batches.   But this has been the exception, not the rule.”*

Hawk Mountain hires multiple judges from various areas of expertise to judge our yearly print contests and we were delighted to hear the unanimous decision to award the grand prize to Clayton.   He has been a loyal, approachable, candid customer for many years.   When I asked him if he knew he had an award winning print in “Sheila and Julian” he said, “I've done portraiture for many years and I knew this was an exceptional image.   But I had no expectation it would win a prize”.

Hawk Mountain Papers thanks Clayton for his business, contributions, and to this interview.   We encourage you all to go to his website,www.cjcom.net, for more information about his work.

* Hawk Mountain has made considerable changes in recent years to avoid changes in paper from different manufacturing runs.   Although it is impossible to make every run identical, especially cotton paper, we adhere to strict manufacturing standards and as a result, the instance of defects and variations has been all but eliminated.
